Thesis Hook Finder WordPress Plugin

This plugin is currently in beta testing. If you notice something that we’ve screwed up, please comment below. This is our first publicly released plugin, so please cut us some slack. ALSO…IF YOU ARE USING WORDPRESS 3.1, YOU WILL NEED TO TURN OFF THE ADMIN BAR UNTIL WE FIGURE OUT A BETTER WAY OF HANDLING DISPLAY OF THE MENU BAR FOR THIS PLUGIN. Instructions can be found here on how to disable the admin bar.

One of the most powerful parts of Thesis is the hook system for accessing different areas of the design. It also tends to be the scariest part for people who have no experience with Thesis. I’m not going to write a long tutorial on how to actually use hooks because Rae Hoffman-Dolan already wrote an awesome hooks tutorial.

Something that many people seem to have questions about is where each of the different hooks are within their own design. This led me to decide to create the Thesis Hook Finder plugin. What this plugin does is allows a user who is logged in as an admin to view a small unobtrusive bar across the top of their design that allows them to show the location of all hooks, no hooks, groups of hooks, or individual hooks. Each hook is linked to the respective page in the Thesis hook reference list.

Installation Instructions

  1. Download the plugin from here (It’s a 17k .zip file)
  2. Unzip the files
  3. Upload the “thesis-hook-finder” folder to your /wp-content/plugins/ folder
  4. Activate the plugin

Using The Plugin

  1. Make sure you are logged in as an admin user
  2. Open the page of your site that you want to view the hook locations on
  3. At the top of the page, there should be a gray bar. This is the menu for showing and hiding hook locations within your design
  4. Click on the hook or group of hooks that you want to show within the layout

Here’s a screenshot of the plugin with all hooks visible –

That’s pretty much it. Nothing earth shattering, but hopefully it will help some people save time in dealing with design issues and hooks. If you’ve been putting off buying Thesis because you’re afraid of the hooks, now is a good time to take the plunge
